Mini Session vs. Full Session: What’s Right for Your Family?

As a Plymouth, Minnesota family photographer, I often get asked this question: “Should we book a mini session or a full session?” The answer depends on your family's needs, preferences, and how you envision your session going. Both session types offer beautiful results, but they each have their own unique vibe.

Let’s break it down so you can decide what’s best for your crew.

What’s a Mini Session?

A 15-minute mini session is short and sweet. It’s designed for families who want just a handful of cherished images without spending too much time in front of the camera.

Why Families Love Mini Sessions:

  • Perfect for short attention spans. Little ones (and let’s be honest, some grown-ups too!) often do great in a short burst of time.

  • Quick and efficient. You’re in and out—ideal for busy families who want beautiful photos but have tight schedules.

  • A smaller investment. If you're just looking for a few updated family photos, this can be a great option.

Good to Know:

  • Mini sessions are scheduled on set dates and times—these are announced in advance and held at a predetermined location. That means a little less flexibility, but all the details are taken care of for you!

  • Mini sessions do not work for newborn photography. Newborns need a slower pace, extra time for feeding and soothing, and a cozy, relaxed environment—which we just can’t accommodate in a short window.

Mini sessions are best suited for families with older babies, toddlers, or school-aged kids who are ready to jump in and have fun quickly!

What’s a Full Session?

A 40-minute full session gives us time to slow down, settle in, and create a wide variety of images. It’s perfect for families who want a more relaxed experience and a deeper storytelling approach to their session.

Why Families Love Full Sessions:

  • More variety. There's time to slow down and get a great mix of posed and candid moments.

  • A relaxed pace. No need to rush—kids (and parents!) can ease into the session and just be themselves.

  • Deeper connection. We get to capture not only smiles, but laughs, hugs, and all those little in-between moments that make your family unique.

  • Scheduling flexibility. Full sessions are booked individually, which means we can find a date, time, and location that works best for you.

Full sessions are also ideal for newborns and families who want a bit more breathing room to create something special together.
